If one is to develop a Biblical Worldview, it is crucial that we recognize Scripture as a reliable source of truth. It is also important to study the data contained therein in a proper manner. Truth is central to an accurate understanding of God’s design for life on earth and correct living (though one can suppress truth in order to live contrary to it). In fact, suppression of truth is a (if not the) foundational problem behind much of our failures to govern properly on earth. To avoid a lengthy, boring, unreadable article, I will comment to one particular statement made by the Truth, Jesus. I will not probe the cultural significance of the terminology, just its significance.
“Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.” (Mt.7:13-14)
As usual, when it comes to ultimate choices, there are only two options. One option leads to life and one to death. Life speaks of right relationship with the Designer and Sustainer of human life and death, separation from the source of life, the Designer and Sustainer. Of course, we are referring to more than biological life.
Our focus today is, “Why is life associated with the narrow gate / way, and death with the wide gate / broad way?” I will offer a simple, but important consideration.
The narrow way represents living according to truth and righteousness (the first two pieces of Paul’s armor). Truth is a limited, specific thing in comparison to lies and deception. As an example, correct answers to the question, “What is two plus two?” are very limited. Incorrect answers to the same question are seemingly unending. That which is right (righteousness) is very limited. On the other hand, one might find many unique ways to do things in a wrong way. Consider the significant insight from Proverbs 14:12 and 16:25, “There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.”
God designed human beings (moral agents) to be governed by and to govern by truth. It is dangerous when people suppress and twist truth (as has the world) or lose interest in truth (as has much of the church, the pillar and support of the truth).
“…speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ…” (Ep.4:15)
“…truth is in Jesus… (Ep.4:21)
“…put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.” (Ep.4:24)
“…you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light (for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth), trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them…” (Ep.5:8-11)
“Stand firm therefore, HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH TRUTH, and HAVING PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS…” (Ep.6:14)
