There is little that can be done to guarantee that a person will be reasonable. We live in an age that is increasingly characterized by impulsive feelings, nearly void of concern for propriety and a waning interest in whether something is right or wrong. Most people are driven by pragmatism and utilitarianism – if it works, if it gets them what they want, it’s okay. Consequently, when emphasizing that the position described below is the most reasonable of the three positions we are considering, many will simply ignore this fact and continue to assume another view.
We have shown that beginning with nothing ensures that we continue to have nothing and, consequently, such an explanation for the origin of the universe is insufficient and unreasonable. We further emphasized that whatever we choose to begin with must be eternal. An eternal, lifeless, impersonal, non-intelligent gas / matter origin is insufficient for explaining the existence of living, intelligent, personal beings and all that come with them such as morality, love, purpose and meaning.
Eternal, Living, Personal, Intelligent Being
The most reasonable explanation for the origin of our universe is an eternal, living, personal intelligent Being who created, is beyond and not dependent upon the universe. This Being is understood to be God. In this explanation, the cause is greater than the effect. In the previous explanation, the effect proves to be greater than the cause. Beginning with the explanation just offered we have a sufficient foundation from which to provide answers for the existence of living, intelligent, personal beings and all that comes with them such as morality, love, purpose and meaning. Of course, this does not mean we immediately and automatically have all answers to all challenging questions about life in this universe but, surely, we have a much better foundation from which to build.
In the next entry we will briefly consider the challenge of gaining understanding about the nature and character of the God who is there.
