Dr. James McHenry, a Maryland delegate of the Constitutional Convention of 1787 records that Benjamin Franklin, as he left Independence Hall, was asked, “Well, Doctor, what have we got—a Republic or a Monarchy?” Franklin is purported to have responded, “A Republic, if you can keep it.”
Have we kept it? Do we even know that we were given a Republic? Most often the United States of America is referred to as a democracy. Is it a democracy? Is there a difference between a Democratic Republic and a Socialist Republic? Is it possible that, regardless of what we call it, we can begin to act as a Monarchy? Does President Obama’s use of executive order reflect the proper use / spirit of executive order or indicate he thinks in terms of a Monarch?
There is, and has been, a shift occurring in this nation. A shift away from what has produced a nation of liberty with law encouraging opportunity and affluence based on hard work and entrepreneurial enterprise. There are many reasons for this. We must, however, be concerned that representatives, voted into office by the citizens of the nation, adhere to a representation consistent with our constitutional form of Republican government. It appears that we are a nation adrift, severed from our mooring.
