God has given the church something that we are to use to produce incredible benefit for all people, individuals and corporate entities. “What is it?” you likely ask (or not). It is TRUTH. Truth is an accurate explanation of how things are designed to function. Of course, there is truth about how things are not functioning properly but that’s the mutant grandchild of the truth that sets us free. The “church” is described by the apostle Paul as “the pillar and support of the truth” (1 Ti.3:15). We can emphasize that love is the most important thing for the Christian to “possess” (or righteousness, holiness, compassion, mercy, etc.), but I would argue that you will not be able to provide a proper definition of love without truth (which aptly describes much of the current dilemma we face in our culture and in the “church”).
Truth is instrumental in our maturation as individuals and as a body. In order to discern error, one must have truth. In order to accomplish our mission, we are dependent upon truth. Though we could use these introductory remarks to launch into a thousand possible directions, I want to emphasize the importance of exercising discernment as we engage the cultural warfare that is raging around us. Some, with lack of discernment, might cringe at the word warfare, but that’s what it is. There are many who strategically labor to advance an agenda that violates the truth that sets us free. As it is my goal to be brief with my posts, I will draw attention to one simple point related to one specific departure from truth (sex / gender issues) in what follows.
As we attempt to provide real solutions, it is important to make a distinction between the battle taking place in the lives of the individual and the battles raging on the level of cultural and social structures. Many individuals experience serious spiritual, moral, relational, psychological struggles that lead to various unhealthy moral and sexual manifestations. When dealing with such individuals, it is not enough to simply encourage them to feel good about themselves (or about us, as many just want everyone to like them). The solution for them is not to be found in cozying up with the demon who plots to consume them. We must engage them on a level that serves to deliver them from the deep immorality they are fostering and demonic oppression they are experiencing. Engaging a deeply confused and disturbed person on a personal level involves great patience, wisdom, discernment and compassion in an effort to speak the truth in love. Real love cannot be realized without truth. Mere “acceptance” accompanied with a warm smile is not love. The task of assisting (often laboring diligently to convince them of their need) a deeply damaged soul in unraveling the twisted mass of aborted truth requires a skilled craftsman. Love and its accompanied use of truth require that we know how and when to be severe and how and when to be kind. When taking a long trip in a car, it is necessary to shift gears quite often.
On the cultural level, we need to realize that there is a much more aggressive, intentional battle raging. There are those who are promoting an agenda that is designed to dismantle God’s moral framework for proper individual and corporate living and who will promote a foundation that will further destroy individuals and society. Often, they will USE individuals who are in captivity to confusion and perversion to advance their destructive agenda (a la Bruce Jenner). This is an ideological battle against truth and morality, which will have extremely detrimental, destructive results and a cultural, social, national level. Those who know the truth must become more alert and discerning, taking an intentional, aggressive approach toward dismantling the agenda of such hate-mongers who portrait themselves as freedom fighters. The question is, though the harvest is certainly plentiful, are equipped, prepared laborers still few?
There are significant, and largely effective, efforts to silence those who oppose the agenda of those who have suppressed God’s truth about such sexual immorality. Strategically crafted language seems to be enough to keep many on the sidelines, or worse, tricking them into scoring points for the wrong team. Words like “gay,” “pro-choice,” “homophobe,” a redefinition of “love” and accusations about being judgmental have befuddled the ill-equipped troupes while the dismantling of our moral foundation takes place as though we are being entertained by the demolition phase of an HGTV makeover.
I place “church” within quotation marks because it is a word that conjures up ideas in the 21st century Western mind that are dominated by images organized services that take place on a specific day with specific components for a specific period of time in a specific buildings rather than a group of people committed to a set of core values, sold out to advancing these values in an attitude of love for God and fellow human beings.
“…make disciples (learners – people who receive truth) of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them (giving them truth) to observe all that I commanded you…”
